Dr. Robert Langer – Biomaterials and How They Will Change Our Lives 7

Posted on March 05, 2011 by admin

Dr. Robert Langer’s talk is the inaugural keynote for a new Invitrogen-UC San Diego Frontiers in Biotechnology Distinguished Seminar Series, organized by the Jacobs School of Engineering and sponsored by Invitrogen. Advances in drug delivery and tissue engineering are revolutionizing medical therapies. New drug delivery technologies including novel polymers and intelligent microchips promise to create new treatments for cancer, heart disease and many other illnesses. Furthermore, by combining mammalian cells with synthetic polymers, new approaches for engineering tissues are being developed that may someday help repair tissues for patients with burns, damaged cartilage, paralysis and vascular disease.

They will stop at nothing for personal gain and profit. Their goal is to dominate the entire world food supply within ~20 years. If you’re talking about PCB chemicals in our environment, Aspartame and its deadly affects, Agent Orange and their offset creation of it AKA ROUNDUP, New Estrogen based Bovine Growth Hormone (BGH) which is creating mutant cows and dangerous milk, water privatization, biopiracy and the patenting of Life forms, untested/unlabeled genetically engineered organisms, the persecution of small scale family farmers, or world domination of the food supply, than you’re talking about the Monsanto Corporation.

GM Foods and Climate Change 8

Video from an English project. *What are Gm Foods: GM stands for Genetically Modified . Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be defined as organisms in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally. It allows selected individual genes to be transferred from one organism into another, also between non-related species. *Why are foods genetically modified? Genetic engineering offers a rapid and precise method of altering organisms as compared to traditional methods that are slow and inaccurate. *Pros: Increased Agricultural Yield and Efficiency- As genetically modified crops increase productivity on the farm, it may lead to decreased food costs for consumers Pest Resistance- Some varieties of genetically modified crops produce their own pesticides that may reduce pesticide application in the fields. Herbicide Tolerance- There is evidence that herbicide-tolerant genetically modified plants may result in reduced soil erosion and herbicide application. Nutrition Benefits- Food can be modified so that they have greater nutritional benefits, which may be of great use in countries where there are significant food shortages. Medical Benefits- Scientists are conducting research on using genetically modified crops to cheaply and effectively produce human medicines. *Cons: Ecological Effects- Potentially, increases of genetically modified crops may negatively affect the environment. For example, genes for herbicide resistance could

Biotech 2009 – Navigating the Sea Change, published by Burrill Media 0

Biotech 2009-Life Sciences: Navigating the Sea Change is the 23rd edition of this yearly publication. It provides a compass to guide you through the current financial market turmoil. The 400-plus page book contains analysis and perspectives on the performance of the industry in 2008 and projections for 2009 and beyond. The biotech industry has had nearly 40 years of easy access to inexpensive capital. The capital markets have permanently restructured, making access to capital more difficult and expensive to access. The changes mean: – Buy-side interest and resources are reduced. – Venture capitalist and private investors no longer can rely on IPOs for exits. – Big Pharma is not as eager to make deals. As these companies see it, technology will be cheaper to buy if they wait. – Falling oil prices may slow the momentum for alternate fuels. About Burrill Media Burrill Media is the creator, sponsor and facilitator of over a dozen leading industry conferences worldwide and publishes a wide range of bio-intelligence reports. Annual conferences include The Biotech Meeting, The Indiana Life Sciences Forum, The Burrill Personalized Medicine Meeting, The Aging Meeting and The Stem Cell Meeting.
